Overview

First of all, it is great to know about your upcoming visit to Rome, one of the most famous and marvelous cities in the world. Rome is a romantic, historical, as well as a spiritual city and can truly be described as an unique tourist destination.  Here is a 2-day itinerary for exploring  Rome.

Things to See

The city of Rome is most famous for its historical monuments, churches, and other old buildings and so on the first day we will visit the important landmarks of the city.

1. Day One

Start out your tour of Rome by visiting Roman Colosseum, one of the most well known structures in the world. It was originally known as Flavian Amphitheater and was built in the first century AD.

Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, another two major tourist attractions, are located near to Colosseum. You can avoid the queue and save time by purchasing a combination ticket for Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Roman Forum. It  can be purchased near the entrance to the Palatine Hall and is  You can also buy a ticket for Roman Colosseum online here. Do not forget to visit the Arch of Constantine located right next to the Roman Colosseum.

After covering Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Roman Forum, proceed to Capitoline Hill to visit the Piazza Del Campidoglio. This Piazza, designed by Micheal Angelo, is situated on the top of the Capitoline Hill. . Explore the Capitoline museums located at the Campidoglio square. These museums house Roman artifacts like statues, coins, ancient jewellery, pottery, tapestries, frescos, and statues of gods, goddesses, warriors, and athletes. Here, you can see  many renowned statues, including She-wolf and her her twins, colossal stature of Constantine, Dying Gaul, and Lo Spinario and the paintings of Caravaggio, Titian, and Tintorerro, .

The Capitoline Hill between the Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the seven hills of Rome. By the 16th century, Capitolinus had become Capitolino in Italian, with the alternative Campidoglio stemming from Capitolium. The English word capitol derives from Capitoline. By this time, you may be hungry.  There is a cafe with a roof terrace and splendid views inside the museum. The roof terrace really offers a marvelous view over the rooftops of the city of Rome.

Post refreshment, start out to visit Santa Maria in Aracoeli, an ancient church situated at the north side of the Capitoline Hill. This church is famous for its 124 marble steps, beautiful interior and a chapel that once housed Santo Bambino, a stature of baby Jesus.

 

Leave Capitol Hill and head for Piazza Venezia to see the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of the United Italy. This white marble monument is in the shape of a wedding card.

Now, it is time to visit  the Pantheon at Piazza della Rotonda,. The Pantheon is a temple dedicated to the pagan gods of Rome. This architectural marvel is now home to the tomb of Raphael, a famous renaissance artist.

Take a walk down the Via del Corso to reach the Trevi Fountain. Make a wish and throw a coin in to the fountain. Then, stroll towards the Spanish Steps and climb up the steps to Borghese Park to enjoy a nice sunset view.

Day Two

Dedicate your second day to Vatican city, the seat of Pope and smallest country in the world. As you know, it boasts numerous museums and other monuments. Vatican can be easily reached from Rome by metro, taxi, or by foot.

Start your Vatican tour by exploring the Vatican Museums. It will definitely be a memorable and exiting  experience for you.

Visit the Sistine Chapel to admire the frescoes of Michelangelo. It is also decorated with the paintings of many other Renaissance artists like Sandro Botticelli, Perugino, and Ghirlandaio.

Pinacoteca is a must-see Vatican museum for anyone with a taste for art. This museum houses collection of paintings that range from middle ages to 1800.

Other museums that you must visit include Raphael's Rooms, Gallery of Maps, Capella Nicolina, Borgia Apartments, and Pius-Clementine Museum.

St Peter's Basilica is located in the heart of the Vatican city. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Take your time to explore this marvelous building and admire the works of great artists.

Also, visit Castel 'Sant’Angelo, a beautiful building nestled on the banks of the Tiber river It is connected to Vatican by an underground passage. This building is home to numerous exhibits that include Renaissance paintings.

After exploring the Vatican City, head to Trastevere, a superb neighborhood with several good restaurants. Dar Poeta  is one of the popular restaurants in Trastevere. Go there to have a nice lunch. Enjoy a leisure time by strolling through the streets of Trastevere.
