Things to See

Among the variety of beach destinations that Europe has to offer, I have chosen Ibiza and Malta, which offer a lot of scenic beauty as well as different types of beaches, for a great holiday experience. Both of these being island destinations, also helps to maintain a base, and explore the surrounding area, without an overwhelming amount of choices like some of the big cities on the mainland.

The beaches of Ibiza can offer you a variety of activities including snorkeling, and you can choose a beach that you want depending on the type of holiday you want. From touristy and crowded beaches like Salinas to secluded ones like Cala d'en Serra, all of them offering you an abundance of natural beauty in their own way.

Here's a description from the Guardian:

Ibiza's most famous beach is the long, white-sand crescent of Salinas, dotted with hip bars and beautiful people. However, it's the island's remote, peaceful coves that are far more prized by locals. Many of these require a long walk down a precipitous cliff path to reach nothing but rocks, dropping straight into the water. Cala d'en Serra is one that gives you the best of both worlds – a tranquil, secluded bay with its very own sandy beach.

Malta is another great beach destination, where you can find beaches and snorkeling activities in plenty. While the popular beaches are near the resorts, the more difficult to find ones will be the rocky ones that  may offer you a great hiking experience to get there, as well as some great snorkeling and beach activities.

Here's a description from a visitor:

As you would expect with most European beach holiday locations, Malta’s beaches can get really busy, especially during the peak summer holiday season of June to August. I sometimes enjoy visiting a busy beach as there is so much going on and it is great for people watching, but what happens if you want to chill out and get away from it all? The good news is that because Malta is an island is has many different kinds of beaches that will suit almost everyone, including those looking to get away from the crowds.

Things to See

The United States offers some great beach destinations, with activities like snorkeling and diving being very well organized at most places. I am picking out two of the best beaches for you, and will give you an idea of what these have to offer.

1. Maui

Doesn't that immediately bring to mind those bright flower garlands and lovely sands? Maui is definitely all it's made out to be, and one of the best experiences Hawaii has to offer. It is a very tourist friendly destination, and you can experience the entire island easily by renting a car and driving around.

Some of the things you will enjoy doing in Maui:

Road to Hana: This is a scenic road taking you past waterfalls and through the rainforest, most of it running past the spectacularly beautiful coastline. It may be considered a bit touristy and crowded, but even with the tight hairpin bends and quite a bit of traffic, it's like this visitor puts it:

For nature lovers, I can't imagine not taking this road. The lushness of the surrounding coastline is something that cannot be fully described. I have never seen so many different shades of green in my entire life.'

Ka'anapali Beach: This is one of the beaches that is not too crowded and offers very good snorkeling. It is situated in West Maui and was at one time named one of America's best beaches. Don't miss the daily diving ceremony off Puu Kekaa or Black Rock. Here's what a reviewer says:

We Loved Ka'anapali Beach. There's great snorkeling right off the beach! And I suggest going during whale season- you can just sit on the beach and watch the whales go by!

Waianapanapa State Park: Well known for its black sand beaches, the Waianapanapa State Park is one of the stops on the Road to Hana, and you can plan to spend a longer time here as well.

2. Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands in the U.S are another destination which offer great beaches and activities like diving and snorkeling. You can decide to spend all your time on one island, or visit all three of them in case you have enough time, as each has their own set of attractions.

Here are a few things you might like to do while you're there:

Buck Island National Monument: This is located in St. Croix and offers you some of the most amazing snorkeling and scuba diving experiences. The island is surrounded by a barrier reef abounding in undersea life. Here's what a reviewer has to say:

I can not describe how beautiful this island is. St Croix's gem of an attraction is one of the best half day trips imaginable. My wife and I were just chillin in the water off the most gorgeous beach called Turtle Beach I believe. And a turtle literally swam up to me and just check us out. My wife got out and grabbed a photo (see posting) and got the shot of a lifetime. We took Big Beards out to the island and the crew were some of the nicest folks we met on our trip. The snorkeling is fantastic, lots of nice coral, and loads of fish species. We followed a small reef shark for about 20 minutes and was neat to see their gentle behavior. This island is truly an American treasure and its great its a National Park and protected. If you go to the Caribbean this is a must see.

Coki Beach: Though this may be a crowded beach, it offers some of the best snorkeling experiences on the islands. From the roadside vendors to the beautiful waters with high visibility, this is a beach you cannot miss out on if you are a snorkeling enthusiast. Here's a review:

Coral World was fun, the beach was beautiful! We were going to rent jet skiis there, but they were pretty expensive, so we decided to go to Coral world instead. They have some great sites, and you can rent snorkel gear at the beach.
