Singapore boasts of one of the best public transport systems in the whole world. Tourists hardly rent a car here.  I will give you sufficient information on how to get around the city using public transport. Let us start by giving you a little overview of the city.

Singapore considered to be one of the world's cleanest cities. A city of skyscrapers and colorful ethnic urban areas, each with a character very much of their own. It offers so much to a traveler. It is also considered to be one of the safest places to visit.

Get Around

Traveling in Singapore is both easy and economical. There is an efficient public transportation network, which offers taxis, buses, and the modern Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system. With its excellent public transport system, Singapore is, without a doubt, the easiest city in Asia to get around.

1. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) (Recommended)

MRT is the most commonly used mode of transport. It is easy and convenient to use and cover almost all of the places of interest. The popular tourist attractions all have a MRT station nearby. Therefore tourists ca easily use the trains to reach the attractions.

If you are on the North-East Line by any chance, do not forget to walk up to the front of the train and see that there is no driver! These trains are fully automated.

Single trip tickets can cost anything from $0.82 to $2

2. Taxi (Recommended)

Taxis are widely available. Bookings can be made over the phone and they usually take around 10 minutes to arrive. Rates are reasonable and standard among all the  taxi companies in Singapore. Taxis here will stop at taxi stands one has to follow  queues to get into one. Taxis can cost you at most $35 even with the tip.

Buses are also a common mode of transportation in Singapore. Most of the  buses are air-conditioned and some even have mobile televisions installed, making rides a pleasant one. The bus system covers mostly all of Singapore. Bus services are regular and inexpensive. There are many types of buses, from mini-buses to double-deck to super-long buses that can take 110 passengers. Bus fares vary according to the distance traveled. You must have exact fare ready as all buses are One-Man-Operated where the driver does everything and does not give change. It is therefore, important for you to know your route and fare beforehand. If you want to try the unconventional, then the best option is the bumboat cruise. These boats cruise along the Singapore river and offer point-to-point rides. On the way you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the city.

These cruises can cost you anything between $3 to $15. You can cruise to the Southern Islands or enjoy a day in Pulau Ubin to experience rural Singapore. this cruise will cost you only $2.50 for a roundtrip.

For convenience of not having to buy the tickets each time you take a train or bus, You can take the Singapore tourist pass.

For $8 a day, tourists can take any number of rides on buses and trains operated by SBS Transit, SMRT Buses and SMRT Trains. Certain buses like Night Rider are not applicable. The Singapore Tourist Pass is available at selected MRT stations.
