Palolem, Goa - Stay And Eating Options On A Low Budget
Which is a better option to stay, north goa or south goa. Can I find air conditioned shacks at Palolem beach? How is the night life in south goa if I am considering to stay at palolem beach? I am little concerned about the food as I do not relish goan cuisine. So, could you suggest some eating joints near Palolem which do not serve goan cuisine. Also, I would prefer eating joints where pork is......read more
Hi. Great that you are visiting Goa. With the swaying palms, balmy beaches, blue ocean and the rich culture, Goa is the place to be. Though it is the smallest state in India, it is an all-time favorite tourist hotspot.
The district of Margao in south Goa houses the Palolem beach, which is by the way an excellent choice to stay during your trip . Palolem is known for its unspoilt crescent shaped beaches. Absolutely lovely !

There are a lot of options as far as staying in Goa is concerned. The answer to your question about finding AC shacks in Palolem is YES. I can see you smiling there ! But since shacks are made to be rustic to give an earthy feeling, there are not many who offer the air conditioning amenity. Here I'll be suggesting a few alternative options as well. But first the AC beach hut.

This is one of the places where you will find air conditioned shacks. Though its a little distance away from the Palolem beach, its worth a try.

I came across a flood of reviews about it, of which I am listing a few here.
I stayed at Cuba in Agonda in November 2010. Their slogan is "Where time takes a break". It certainly does! This place is wonderfully relaxing, and its location right on the beach can't be beaten. The management are extremely helpful and friendly - nothing is too much trouble, and they are really keen to make sure you have a great stay. The food in the restaurant is lovely. Overall, my favourite place in Goa.
We stayed at cuba nov 2010. We had originally booked cuba at patnem beach. But due to the Monsoon the huts we not ready so went to Agonda. We are so glad we did go. Their slogan is 'Where time takes a break' and it really does. The location on the beach was perfect. The huts were clean, spacious and comfortable. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, nothing was to much trouble for them. They helped to arrange trips and taxi's for us.Free Sun beds with towels were provided. The food served was of high quality with a good selection for vegitarian and meat dishes.
I would highly recommend these beach huts to anyone who wants to get away for a truely relaxing holiday. Thank you to everyone at cuba agonda for making our stay so memorable, we will returning.
And this is what another happy traveler said:
This is the third time we have gone to Cuba in Agonda, Goa and we are never disappointed!
The staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming, the rooms are clean and have all the essentials. If you want peace and quiet in lovely surroundings, go to -Cuba!!
You will come back rejuvenated !
Aren't you already in love with this resort? I seem to be ! It might seem like a little on the higher side of the budget that you mentioned, but its worth it.

A traveler from Denmark shares his experience:
This is such a nice guesthouse that I can highly recommend. We looked at a lot of rooms in Palolem before deciding on the Om Sai Guest House. We choose Om Sai, because it was the best value for money that we could find, and it had the best beds. Our room had air con, hot water and free wifi. We could have found a cheaper place to stay, but would rather pay a bit extra and get a nice room, with a really good bed. It is actually the best bed we have had in Goa, as it is not hard as the traditional Indian beds. The service was amazing, such nice people, making us feel very welcome and extremely helpful. I can definitely recommend this place to other travelers.
Its close to the beach, its comfortable, has everything that you asked for.

Another place for which I got a lovely review. This is how Frommers put it:
It's not on the beach, but it's the only place in Palolem with actual style, not to mention fabulous, modern bathrooms, and healthful breakfasts (real coffee, good tea, homemade muesli). The guesthouse occupies an unlikely looking property (and a very kitsch-looking double-story house) in Palolem village, leased from a local family and operated by a lovely Anglo-Irish couple who've spent years chilling out in Palolem, and finally decided to bring some dignity to the lodging scene. Inside, the atmosphere and decor is Zen-minimalist -- there's ample space, assorted Buddha statuary, framed black and white photographs, and fresh, modern, all-white rooms with frame-style poster beds brightened by a single colorful throw atop quality linens. There's plenty of solar-heated hot water, and as we've hinted already, exceptional showers.
Near the budget you mentioned, and a lovely place to stay. An option worth considering indeed!

The Village Guest House was just as we left it last year, we had a wonderful warm 'Coming Home' reception from the always hosptable Goran and Janet, and the rest of the Indian staff are all delightful especially Yogi the expert barman. The rooms are immaculate, spacious with marble bathrooms and plenty of hot water. There are new quiet air conditioners in the rooms (not that we needed them, just used the fan), electronic safes and satellite TV if you're in need of a media fix

This is another resort which has AC beach huts, but only two. So it might be difficult to get one at a short notice. Here's an excerpt:
For those who look forward for basic yet comfortable accommodation in palolem beach , Royal Touch Resort offers 12 beach cottages.
With 2 A/C and 10 Non - A/C beach huts situated right on the beach front , one can look forward for a beautiful beach holiday and a wonderful sun tan to boot.

Don't like Goan cuisine? No problem! There are plenty of options to suit your palate. You can chose from French, Italian, Mexican, Chinese and a lot more. Here's a list of the restaurants that you can try out.
Sitting at a perfect location, this is the best place for a multi-cuisine experience. This explains it quite beautifully:
If you are at palolem beach and on the lookout for an ideal beach cafe most likely Cuba's beach cafe located in the central part of palolem beach fits your taste. The setting and the location of the cafe is ideal if one wants to be alone and enjoy the natural beauty of palolem beach or if you are the kind who wants to meet and make friends with people around the world.
The cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and caters a multi-cuisine menu and at the bar one can try the finest mixture of cocktails.
Sitting here you can soak up the perfect sunset over a cup of coffee or that perfect cocktail.

If you want a taste of authentic kebabs and biryani at Palolem, then I think you should try it out. This is what a traveler said:
I visited palolem this year and as normally it would be, there were a bunch of new restaurants open. This eatery(a small one) is located on "teen rasta" (three road junction) one way to Intercontinental one to Patnem and the other to Chaudi mkt. It has just been opened and does not have much to do with the ambience, but the surroundings is spectacular. A view of the mountains and open fields and the railway station. But when it comes down to the food part of it.... its really mouthwatering...and tastes home made. Basically for meat lovers, it specializes in Kebabs and Biryani during the evenings and serves chicken curry and fish curry for lunch.
Favorite Dish: The tandoori leg was perfect with spices and soft. Kebabs were Chic marinated in milk, chicken marinated with mint and chicken marinated in chilli. Biryani was good, but a bit spicy. you could ask them to add less masala to the rice. its DUM biryani, hence already cooked.
If you are in a mood to bite into that perfect cheezy pizza then this is the place for you. It is an Italian restaurant in Agonda. I was pretty impressed by what I read. Here it goes:
The compelling ambience coupled with the picturesque land and seascape of the Agonda beach, in South Goa, serves as an apt backdrop for La Dolce Vita-an authentic Italian restaurant. La Dolce Vita in Italian means a good life; a life of pleasure and indulgence and its here that one can indulge in the various Italian dishes on offer here. The menu comprises of a never ending list of pastas (50 types of pastas), pizzas and Tiramisu (one of the most popular Italian cakes). A connoisseur of true Italian pizza will vouch for the genuineness of the pizza that are cooked here in conventional wood ovens and pure imported olive oil.

The most happening thing about Goa is its nightlife. It is as lively a city during the night as it is during daytime!

This is what a tourist had to say:
With chairs and tables set in the sand on the beach it's a great place to come. We spent a lot of time here. It is great if you are in a group as they separate your bill without asking. The staff are friendly and the food is good. Average prices for drinks

The name itself is quite interesting , and the experiences that some travelers have had are not bad either. From a traveler's view:
We have had some good nights here. It is a warm welcoming place. Open all year even throughout the monsoon. Good place to eat if you are missing food from home. We liked this place so much that we had our Christmas Dinner here.

You can catch the 'Silent Noise' party, held on Saturdays. Don't get confused. This party is so named because here you'll have to put on headphones and they'll play different genres of music, to which you can sway, and the neighbors won't even have to know !
