Things to See

Chittorgarh is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist attractions in the land of warriors - Rajasthan. There are many things to see and do while you are in Chittor and I am suggesting some good option for you to check out. Hope you like my recommendations.

1. Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort is one of the prominent attractions in Chittorgarh. This fort was the capital of Mewar from 7th century till 16th century, and it is majestically spread across a hill overlooking the city of Chittorgarh and Bhilwara. There are seven gates to the fort which is locally called 'Pol' and they are named as Hanuman Pol, Jodla Pol, Ganesh Pol, Laxman Pol, Ram Pol, Padan Pol and Bhairon Pol.

The fort is spread across 700 acres of land and can be categorized in different sections like the Victory Tower area (Vijay Stambh) which was erected by Rana Khumbha to commemorate the victory against Mahmud Shah I Khalji, the Sultan of Malwa, in 1440 AD.

Kirti Stambha is another notable attraction built by a Bagherwal Jain merchant Jijaji Rathod dedicated to Lord Adinath who was the first Tirthankara of Jains. There are 54 stairs that lead to the top floor which was made in the 15th century supported by 12 columns.

Rana Khumbha's Palace is another attraction near the main entrance which is also the oldest monument in the entire complex. The palace premises included a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, elephant and horse stables etc.

Padmini's Palace is a white three storied structure surrounded by water moat on the south side of the fort. Legend has it that, this is the palace where Alauddin Khilji got a glimpse of Rani Padmini in a Mirror. Rani Padmini was known for her beauty and can be rightly called an answer to Alexandria's Cleopatra.

3. Gaumukh Reservoir

Gaumukh Reservoir is a deep tank filled by spring that comes out of a 'Cow's Mouth' sculptor which is located at the edge of the cliff. This is a sacred place where you can feed the fishes.

Here is what Taaza Travel has to describe about this beautiful reservoir:

Chittorgarh remembered for bravery and valor of their rulers famous for personalities like Maharana Pratap, Meera Bai, Panna Dhai, RaniPadmini, Rana Kumbha etc. is a city of forts apart from its marble and important temples. Gaumukh reservoir is a big water reservoir where water gushes out of a rock shaped in the form of a cow's mouth. Gaumukh Kund is a beautiful cute reservoir located on the western side of the Chittorgarh Fort. The name Gomukh is derived from the natural beauty of a permanent flow at its origin formed and flows out as the mouth of a cow or as a Gomukh. The water flows through a crack in the Rock and eventually fall into the Reservoir at Gomukh. Nearby is Rani Bindar tunnel which is lead into the subterranean chamber famous with the folk tale that Rani Padmini of Chittorgarh committed sati here in this chamber.

I stayed in the Pratap Palace for three nights in October 2011. The rooms were spacious and very clean, a pleasant garden to have breakfast and a beer in the evening and the food was good. But, what made this place excellent, was the friendly and helpful staff. It is close to the railway track, however, I liked the haunting sound of the trains as they passed through the town. Good value and comfortable.
