Comparing Austria, Italy and Liechtenstein

Hi!

It's great that you're being so thorough in researching your holiday destinations :) In comparing the three countries you are considering, I've focus on getting there from Switzerland and accommodation costs for a mid-range hotel.

The cheapest flights from Geneva to Vienna would cost you, on an average, the following:

Getting into Austria by plane or train is generally cheaper than by bus. Trains into Austria from all of its neighboring countries are very frequent - the least frequent being every hour. ÖBB offers discount 'SparSchiene' tickets for a flat rate, but there are a limited number of these. For example, for a Innsbruck to Salzburg connection, a Standard 2nd class ticket costs 37.80 Euro while a Standard 1st class ticket  65.90 Euro. The SparSchiene ticket costs are Euro 9 for Second Class and Euro 19 for First Class.

Accommodation in Austria would cost you in the range of USD 70 to USD 150, depending on amenities and location.

I found an unexpectedly cheap flight from Geneva to Rome!

However, generally flights from Geneva to Rome cost around the following:

Besides by air, you can also travel from Switzerland to Italy by train or bus. Here's a tip from Lonely Planet:

There are plenty of options for entering Italy by train, bus or private vehicle. Bus is the cheapest option but services are less frequent, less comfortable and significantly longer than the train.

Accommodation in Italy will cost you in the range USD 70 to USD 150, depending on amenities and location.

3. Liechtenstein

Being the sixth smallest country in the world, it's not surprising that there is no international airport in Liechtenstein. To get to the capital Vaduz from Switzerland, you can either take a train or a bus. Here's what Wikitravel says:

OBB, the Austrian federal railway company, has been continually providing a limited service from Buchs SG station in Switzerland, to the Schaan-Vaduz station near Schaan. Trains only run a few times a day.  The Best and most frequent option is to arrive by bus. Buses run every 15 minutes form Buchs SG train station to Schaan and Vaduz. Tickets can be purchased on the bus for 2.60 CHF and it only takes about 10 minutes to Schaan and another 5 to Vaduz.

Accommodation in Vaduz would cost you in the range USD 100 to USD 200, depending on the kind of amenities and location. Costs in general in this country are similar to those in Switzerland.

With respect to traveling around Liechtenstein, here's a tip from Lonely Planet:

Postbus travel within Liechtenstein is cheap and reliable; all fares cost Sfr2.40 or Sfr3.60, with the higher rate for journeys exceeding 13km (such as Vaduz to Malbun). Grab a timetable from the Vaduz tourist office.

Closing Notes

To summarize, Austria, Italy and Liechtenstein, all being neighbouring countries of Switzerland, do not have vastly different expense rates. Liechtenstein is similar to Switzerland in costs and therefore slightly more expensive than other European countries. Getting there from Switzerland, however, is the cheapest. Austria and Italy score on the large number of available hotels with rates that are relatively more reasonable.
