Travel Insurance for a trip to China

China - Trip To China With Husband  >  Hi Kirti, all the hotel...

Kirti Manian

Welcome back and great to hear you are almost set for China! I am going to do my best to help you out for travel insurance for your husband, prepaid mobile phone options and lastly Must-Dos for Shanghai for the dates that you have mentioned.

Travel Insurance

I checked online for travel insurance covers and found a website which collates the information. I haven't inputted finer details of the policies but do click on the links and that should give you comprehensive information on what the policy offers. All of these are Asia-centric policies.

Company Charges Medical expenses incl transportation and evacuation Loss of Passport Personal Accident
Reliance 626/- $25,000 $100 $7500
Tata AIG – only covers 14 days 597/- $25,000 $250 $7500
Bajaj Allianz 586/- $25,000 $100
Deductible : $25

$7,500
ICICI Lombard 945/- $250,000 $200 $15,000
Apollo Munich 490/- $25,000 $200 $10,000

At first glance, Apollo Munich offers the cheapest policy but if you look at what ICICI Lombard offers, at a more expensive one time payment, you do get a much better deal. But do read the fine print before you get yourself the insurance.

Prepaid mobile phone options

I spoke to a friend of mine who has lived in Shanghai for a while now. She suggested China Mobile as the best option. Just go to any China Mobile store in a mall, show some id proof (reckon your passport should be enough) & you can buy a prepaid mobile card on the spot. They will help activate it for you and also show you how to check balance so you know when to top up.

I found this information online regarding the same, so do have a read please.

MUST-DO's in Shanghai

  • Check out CHA happening at the Expo. The CHA stage show combines mesmerising acrobatics, martial arts and magic to create a symbolic portrayal of China's tea-drinking culture. It has been exclusively designed for the Expo and happens four times a day in the Expo Site's Entertainment Hall so don't miss this out!
  • Check this website and this one as well for weekly picks closer to the date
  • Check out ERA -Shanghai's most popular acrobatic show at anything b/w RMB 180 - RMB 580 ($26-$84). It happens (as of now) at Shanghai Circus World at 7.30 pm everyday.
  • There is a downloadable list of events happening at the Expo - its about 21 mb so beware!
  • Try and grab a copy of the Shanghai Timeout - I can't seem to find an English version online so when you get into the city, use this resource wisely.
  • A designer brand in Shanghai has launched an IPhone application which gives you info on the city's hotspots. If you think you want to download this, check this link here for more information.

So enjoy and do give us feedback when you return if you found all your advice useful. If you need more detailed information on travel insurance, or you are craving for pizza in Shanghai, do write back to us and we would be more than happy to help.

Cheers

Kirti
