Michelle's answer about things to do in New York

New York City Serenade (Source: b k)

'As for New York City, it is a place apart. There is not its match in any other country in the world.' - Pearl S. Buck

Wow! A romantic getaway to New York for two! So what if it is only two days, let's help you show your girlfriend around!

Weather

As it is winter, remember to pack layers so you can dress appropriately. The nights get very cold and you wouldn't want to ditch your warm clothes! Trust me!

Events

Being as cosmopolitan as it is, there are always things to do in NYC. Here are some great musicals you can witness on Broadway! How exciting does that sound? Everybody loves a musical!

Things to See

I'm glad you mentioned you'd like to stay away from the usual touristy stuff. I found answers for you which mention offbeat things to do in NYC here and here. And if you reckon that is not enough, check out my recommendations too!

1. Bike Along the Hudson River (Recommended)
0

If you would like a little adventure, rent a bicycle (a double bicycle - if you and the girlfriend want to be extra adventurous) and ride along the Hudson River. You can cycle the entire length of Manhattan and there are small detours you can take along the way, if you'd like.

A great way to spend an afternoon exploring Manhattans lesser known treasures.

2. Take a Food Tour (Recommended)
0

If you're a foodie like me, what better way than to travel through New York on a food tour that will literally 'take you places'? There are a lot of groups that offer tours centered around food.

How exciting would it be to explore Brooklyn through its BEST pizza's or tasting some African food in Harlem and then Caribbean, Spanish and soul foods in the other Burroughs?

3. The Skinny House (Recommended)

Greenwich Village, literally houses an interesting sight. New York City's narrowest house, which is 9 1/2 feet wide. Located at 75 1/2 Bedford Street, just west of Varick Street.

The house once belonged to writer Edna St. Vincent Millay. Although the house is privately owned and you can't go in, it's a great little escape from the regular touristy stuff.

4. Love (sculpture)

A sculpture by American artist Robert Indiana. Made of COR-TEN steel and has been on exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art since 1975.

This would be a great place to take a picture and frame it to celebrate your love!

5. Museum of Sex

Got your attention, didn't I? Located on 233 Fifth Ave. at 27th Street. Tickets can be bought for  $14.50 and you have to be 18 to get in, which is good. So, remember to carry some ID.

The museum may sound raunchy at first thought, but I assure it is educational as it is fun!

Remember to dine at the adjoining 'Oralfix' restaurant if you have the time!

The Museum's permanent collection of over 15,000 artifacts is comprised of works of art, photography, clothing and costumes, technological inventions and historical ephemera. Additionally, the museum houses both a research library as well as an extensive multimedia library, which includes 8mm, Super 8mm, 16mm, BETA, VHS and DVDs. From fine art to historical ephemera to film, the Museum of Sex preserves an ever-growing collection of sexually related objects that would otherwise be destroyed and discarded due to their sexual content.

6. Statue of Liberty

I know, I know, I said I'd stay away from the regular touristy stuff, but which first timer doesn't like The Statue of Liberty? The view from the crown is exquisite!

Surprise her with a few little known facts such as:

  • When shipped from France to New York, she came in 350 pieces.
  • Once delivered, it took four months to put her together, and was completed on October 28, 1886.

And instead of going the traditional route, take a ferry from Battery Park. Tickets cost just $12 per person and include the New York Pass which gives you free entry to a few other attractions.

To avoid the long lines I suggest you buy your tickets online. CLICK HERE to choose your cruise and/or buy tickets.

Shopping

We'll keep away from the regular hi-end stores that can burn holes in pockets and stick to little shopping joys that are wallet friendly.

1. Canal Street
0

East of Broadway in Chinatown, Canal Street is a bargainer's paradise.

A paradise for bargain hunters and people looking to buy counterfeit knock-offs of high-end clothes and accessories. If you want to impress people back home with the fake Louis Vuitton bag you got for $30, this is the place to go. Also look at the stores that line Mott Street between Canal and Chatham Square. Nearby is NoLiTa, which has become synonymous with avant-couture boutiques in charmingly dilapidated buildings. Some stores are so idiosyncratic that they appear not to sell anything at all, yet are perpetually crowded and passionately trendy.

2. Beacon's Closet

Although located on 5th Avenue, this little store that is incredibly cheap yet hip has second hand stuff that are eye-catching and easy on the pocket.

Also remember to make a stop to the nearby Brooklyn Superhero Supply Store just for kicks.

Items on sale include capes, masks, secret identity kits, invisibility detection goggles, particle blasters, powdered anti-matter, deflector gauntlets, bottled justice, maps showing hotspots of good and evil, power rings, and countless other tools essential for any hard-working do-gooder. Test a cape, get devillainized, create your superhero persona and enter it in the master log - they've got it all.

So here are some of my options for you to do and see in New York. Regardless, I am sure you will have an awesome trip.

Once you go through the above and would like more suggestions, please do get back to us. We can help to plan a two day itinerary, suggest great clubs to party at, fancy restaurants to dine at or simply some more plays you can catch while there.

Until then,

Cheers,

Michelle.
