Belgium is not really known for its wines. It's the beer that has gained the country its reputation in the brewing hall of fame. The climatic changes that occurred in the fifteenth century made it unsuitable to grow quality grapes needed to make wines, but recent temperature transitions have once again made it possible to grow and manufacture wines in the region. Wallonia near Brussels is one of the handful of regions where wineries have started to come up recently. Two of the best wine tours in the Wallon valley are suggested here.

A south facing hillside, 4 different varieties of red wines, a lovely stream flowing down the foothills...what more can a wine lover want? Domaine du Ry d'Argent is five hectares of greenery and history. Three of their wines - the Le blanc - Solaris, Le rouge “La Ronce” and the Le rouge “La Rivière”have received rave reviews from the maître sommelier Philippe Berger, and all their wine varieties are certified by the A.O.C.
Here is an excerpt from the review by Berger:

Geneva, in the French speaking part of Switzerland, borrows the love of wine from its neighbour. The countryside of Vaud, Satigny and Commugny are famous for their wines and wineries. Most of them have an open door policy and welcome visitors with open hearts. We have picked out two of them that you may like.

The Rochaix family has owned this estate for nearly 200 years now, and needless to say they are masters of their chosen art of wine making. Set in the beautiful surroundings of the village of Peissy in the Satigny region, Domaine les Perrieres is one of Geneva's best vineyards. The wine list includes favourites such as Pinot Banc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Savignon but you can also find some local varieties.
Here is an amateur sommelier's review of the domaine's wines:
We tried several wines of which we bought three (see separate blog posts). Of the others, my impressions were : Chasselas : Fruity glugger, Mark : C Aligote : Almonds, very dry yet fruity, Mark : C Gamaret : Rustic, fruity, smooth tannins, Mark : B- Muscat : Sweet, fruity, cutting acidity on a long finish

10 hectares of sprawling vineyards, grown using environment friendly methods. Located in Piessy, Domaine des Charmes is renowed for its Griset White wine, which is a rarity and a speciality of the domaine. They sell wines online but they love having people over for as the owners of the vineyard would say, their aim is not to 'sell a product" but to share their way of life and take pleasure in the joy of it.
Here's what owner Anne Conne has to say about her vineyard:
I often hear that winemakers 'treat' all the time and they use their vines full of chemicals ... It irritates me and saddens me even more that are sometimes friends who have an image if false in our work! It is a mixture of inaccurate ideas and lack of information ... and that's just our fault! ... Our concern for ecology is permanent! We constantly seek to be as fair as possible in our work, to intervene as little as possible in our vineyards, still less use of pesticides and ever more targeted ....

Here's a review:
If you ever want to learn a little about French wine and how to sample it, I highly recommend this experience. The staff are wonderful - knowledgeable on wine, friendly, interesting, take the time to visit with you and VERY customer oriented. All speak English. We did the French Tasting - you go in the wine cave, sit at a large old wood table, taste 1 champagne and 5 wines. Excellent!

Montmartre, a hidden vineyard is located in the heart of Paris on a steep hill ,near Basilica of Sacre-Coeur. Interestingly, Montmarte is the sole vineyard producing a Parisian wine in Paris. Just walk along the cobblestone streets that will lead to joing of Rue des Saules and Rue Saint-Vincent .

Here's a review:
Mention French wines and you immediately think of the famed terroirs of Bordeaux, Burgundy or Alsace. But little is often said about a Parisian wine that is produced in the heart of Montmartre.

Here's a review:
This tour was fantastic. We were given a tour of a vineyard and winery by the winemaker and then visited a medieval (12th cent.) town. Our guide could not have been better. Having gone to school in the U.S. he is fluent in English. The Beaujolais country is beautiful. We most highly recommend this tour. It was not only most enjoyable, but also very informative.

Here's a review:
The first time I took the train through the northern Rhone valley I gazed in awe at the steep slopes of the vineyards of Hermitage, with their vineyard blocks labeled with huge signs. I went back this spring to discover an area perfect for the independent walker, the photographer, the wine connoisseur, or the gourmet.

Established in 2003, and spread over an area of 10 ha, the Vineyard of Chenoy is a new age winery which grows resistant varieties that are more suited to the climate of Belgium and can be used to produce better quality wines. Their wines are characteristically light in alcohol content, easily digestible and emphasis is put on preserving the taste of the fruit. Two of their wines have even won distinctions at the AWC Vienna, 2011.
The owners of Chenoy are also generous hosts who love to show off their prized wines. Here is a heartfelt review of their hospitality:
